Open Office

I just had the need to edit a MS Word document on the home PC and add some features that MS Works does not quite support yet. A neighbor recommended Open Office.

I downloaded the 127M install file in about 5 minutes, it look the virus scanner a few minutes to digest and then I fired it up. The install took another 5-7 minutes or so with stops for the virus scanner/registry monitor intermittently

and hey, I 'm editing! Cool! Anyone have any experiences with this package good or bad?

I have abandoned MS Office for OpenOffice a few months ago. When Lou's hd died, we didn't even install MS Office. The only items I miss from MS office is the envelope printing tool. Labels are a little easier to generate. Calc and Presentation are also good. In fact, I am editing a presentation in it right now.

FYI, OpenOffice 3.0 is available as of October 13. It offers Office 2007 compatibility among other things (not that anyone uses Office 2007 filetypes). I've been using OpenOffice for about a year (at home), and carry a portable copy on my USB drive (www.portableapps.com).
